Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching is an advanced stretching technique. It relies on the body's inverse myotatic reflex (a protective reflex that relaxes and calms the muscle to prevent injury), while involving stretching and contraction of the targeted muscle group to produce deeper stretches.
Deep fascia is the fibrous connective tissue which encases individual muscles and muscle groups. The deep fascia provides muscle support, muscle separation, and muscle surface lubrication for movement. With inactivity or injury, the fascia may bind together, thus limiting your movement and creating or exacerbating injury. Fascial stretching helps release tissue binding.
